About Romania
Romania lies in South-East Europe, bordered by Ukraine, Moldova, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria as well as by the Black Sea. The Danube river flows along the southern border and forms a delta where it flows into the Black Sea. Romania has three historical regions: Wallachia to the South, Moldavia to the North-East and Transylvania to the North-West. Several large rivers, such as the Mures and the Siret, rise in these mountains whose highest point is Mt Moldoveanu, 2544m above sea level. The climate is moderate with hot, dry summers and cold winters with frequent snowfall, especially in the high mountains. Spring and autumn are cool and pleasant, making May and June and September and October the best months for visit.
The country's geography is diverse and varies from mountains, rolling hills and rural farmlands to white sandy beaches and resorts along the Black Sea Coast. The inland is completely unspoilt, with rustic villages where local people live as they have done for the past 100 years. Apart from its spectacular scenery and natural features, the country abounds with numerous historical and architecture monuments, its towns and cities illustrating the invaluable treasures of a rich history.
The biggest attractions are exquisitely painted monasteries of Bucovina, castles and ancient churches across the country. The charms of Transylvania lure people with the imagery of haunted forests, medieval towns, vampires, turreted cliff-top castles, and the legends of Dracula. In addition to its medieval castles and enchanting historic towns, the region also offers the dramatic alpine scenery of the Carpathian Mountains with spectacular skiing and hiking opportunities. The capital city, Bucharest, is re-inventing itself as a modern and thriving capital with great architecture, elegant restaurants, a revitalised nightlife and cultural attractions that are integral part of its new image.
Romania is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination with plenty to offer for travellers and visitors. A visit to the country will leave few impassive, offering a refreshingly different culture to elsewhere in Europe. The mix of the diverse rural landscape, picturesque medieval towns and castles, and a thriving capital city offers a fascinating kaleidoscope of opportunities to explore.
