Foreign investors still interested in Romania - ARIS

Foreign investors are still interested in the Romanian market, despite the international crisis, except for companies in the automotive industry which are more cautious in launching new investments, Sorin Vasilescu, a manager with Romanian agency for foreign investments ARIS, said.
Since the beginning of the year, ARIS received 12 project plans from foreign investors, representing investments of over EUR 700 million, that could create 3,000 jobs, Vasilescu said.
Foreign direct investments (FDI) in Romania reached EUR 1.3 billion in the first two months of the year, compared to EUR 995 million in the respective period last year, according to the central bank data.
''We maintain our forecast of EUR 4.5 billion - EUR 5 billion FDI for 2009, but if the first two months' growth pace continues, the estimates may be exceeded," Vasilescu said.
In Romania, the foreign investors are interested mainly to invest in manufacturing equipments for alternative power sources, in the construction materials and IT sectors.
"Investors come from countries such as the USA, Italy, Germany or China. The largest investment project, of around EUR 100 million, is in the power sector. We are now trying to attract investors especially in the industrial parks,'' Vasilescu added.
Foreign direct investments (FDI) in Romania reached EUR 9 billion (USD 11.6 billion) in 2008, compared to EUR 7.2 billion in 2007. Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea has said that FDI in Romania are expected to drop to EUR 6 billion in 2009.
