10 July 2009

Some 21 foreign investors announced plans to invest in Romania since the beginning of the year, with the total value of projects amounting to EUR 1.46 billion, and 5,000 new jobs, the Vice President of the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investment (ARIS), Claudiu Preoteasa, told Business Standard.

Moreover, according to the official, ARIS provides assistance for a total of 81 projects, worth €7.8 billion, of which 60 projects are in the agency’s portfolio since last year.

“If all these investments projects were implemented, over 30,000 jobs would be created,” Preoteasa said. “These are Greenfield investments, in sectors such as machinery and equipment, renewable energy, hotel industry, agriculture, packaging production, and smelting,” Preoteasa added. At present, targeted investors are Asian, according to the official.

“The agency is in talks with two state-owned companies in China in the energy field, for investments in the modernization of some thermo-plants,” the Vice President of ARIS said. Preoteasa said that Romania is competing mainly with countries such as Turkey, Serbia, Poland, and Bulgaria, in terms of attracting investors. “Of all these countries, in Romania, foreign investments registered the lowest decline in the first four months of this year. They dropped 70 percent in Poland, by 59.4 percent in Bulgaria, and by 45 percent in Turkey,” ARIS Vice President added.

Foreign direct investments in Romania fell by an annual 13.9 percent in the first three months of 2009, to €1.456 billion, over twice the current account deficit, according to data provided by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

Of the foreign direct investments registered in the first quarter of 2009, capital contributions made up 50.8 percent, the reinvested profit – 9.3 percent, and intragroup loans covered the remaining 39.9 percent, according to BNR.
